BIOGRAPHY


Erika Gentry is an internationally exhibited, interdisciplinary artist working within photography, video and installation. Her projects explore issues of identity as expressed through the use of technology and place. A self proclaimed Francophile, she exhibits and travels internationally and in 2014 was an artist in residence in France funded in part by the Tenot Foundation and Center for Cultural Innovation. She also designs photography workshops for intermediate photographers in France and San Francisco: Photography in France and www.erikagentry.com.

Gentry specializes in lens based media (video, photography) digital imaging, multi media arts, education and fine art printing in the Bay Area. An early advocate of the creative digital domain, she has been teaching and presenting electronic arts and photography nationwide since 1996 and has been a consultant to many of the industry’s leading photographers. She has worked in freelance visual arts, magazine and book picture editing, art direction, advanced digital post-production, web design and as a curator and educator. She has taught one-on-one and group courses at corporations and colleges such as The Rochester Institute of Technology, The San Francisco Art Institute, Foothill College, City College of San Francisco and Rayko Photo Center. She is currently a full-time faculty member and Department Chair of Photography at the City College of San Francisco.

Gentry grew up in Portland Oregon and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from The School of Journalism and Communications at the University of Oregon in Eugene. She completed her master of fine arts degree at The College of Imaging Arts and Sciences from New York’s Rochester Institute of Technology. She has served as a Director on the National Board and the West Regional Board for The Society for Photographic Education where in 2012 she co-chaired it’s first sold out national conference in San Francisco. She has also served on the advisory board of Lens Culture Magazine and is former Vice President to the Board of Directors for Fotovision.org and the former Chair or Programs for the Board of SF Camerawork. She is a twice-honored candidate for the CENTER’s Excellence in Teaching Award and enjoys sharing her knowledge of photo history as well as traditional and digital processes with her students.

Erika Gentry est une artiste interdisciplinaire dont les oeuvres, que ce soit de la photographie, de la vidéo ou des installations, ont été exposées internationalement. Ses projets portent sur des thèmes autour de l’identité exprimée à travers l’usage diverses technologies et lieux. Aimant se présenter comme francophile, elle expose et travaille dans le monde entier. En 2014, elle a été en résidence en France au sein de la fondation Centre d’innovation culturelle Tenot. Installée dans la Baie de San Francisco, Erika est spécialisée dans la vidéo et la photographie, l’image numérique, les arts multi-medias,la formation et l’impression de tirage d’arts. Elle fut une des premières artistes dans le domaine de la création numérique, et depuis 1996 enseigne les arts et la photographie numérique. À ce titre elle fut consultant pour de nombreux photographes industriels.

Elle a travaillé en free-lance dans les arts visuels, l’édition de livres et magazines photos, la direction artistique, la post-production numérique avancée, le web design, a été curatrice et enseignante. Elle a donné des course individuels ou en groupe dans des entreprises et des collèges tels que que Le Rochester Institute of Technology, Le  San Francisco Art Institute, Foothill College, City College of San Francisco et Rayko Photo Center. Elle est aujourd’hui membre du corps enseignant au City College deSan Francisco

Erika Gentry a grandi à Portland, dans l’Etat d’Oregon. Elle est diplômée de l’Ecole de journalisme et de communication de l’Université d’Oregon. Elle a ensuite complété ses études avec un Master des beaux-Arts au College d’Imaging Arts and Sciences de l’Institute de Technologie à Rochester Institute of Technology à New York. Elle a  siégé à titre d'administrateur au conseil d'administration national et du conseil de la région Ouest de The Society for Photographic Education. En 2012, elle a co-présidé leur première conférence  à San Francisco, une conférence qui affichait complet. Elle a également été dans le conseil d’administration de Lens CultureMagazine et a été vice-présidente du bureau de fotovision.org.

Elle a été deux fois nominée d’honneur pour l'esprix d’Excellence de l’enseignement de CENTER. Elle a particulièrement apprécié de partager avec ses étudiants ses connaissances en histoire de la photographie et en procédés numériques.
